WHAT IS A "GREEN BUILDING"
The Green Built Homes of AmericaTM certification
program assures you, the homeowner, that your home
has been designed and certified to comply not only
with required Energy Star programs, but to exceed California's
energy management standards through improved building
methods.
In
response to growing demand from consumers and numerous
organizations, the Environmental Protection Agency
has set voluntary goals for the building industry that
promote environmentally responsible construction methods.
The goal is to build homes that are at least 15% more
energy efficient than homes that meet California's
Energy codes.
The EPA defines this "Green Building" as "the
practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient
models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance,
and demolition". The many elements addressed through
Green Building include: Energy Management, Water Conservation,
Improved Indoor Environments, Choice of Building Materials,
and Construction Waste Reduction.
The Green Building phenomenon was born
in California during the energy crisis of the late
1970s. Title-24 Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential
and Nonresidential Buildings were established in 1978
in response to a legislative mandate to reduce California's
energy consumption.
The standards are updated periodically
to allow consideration and possible incorporation of
new energy efficiency technologies and methods. New
standards were adopted by the Commission in 2001 as
mandated by Assembly Bill 970 to reduce California's
electricity demand. The new standards went into effect
on June 1, 2001. The standards (along with standards
for energy efficient appliances) have saved more than
$20 billion in electricity and natural gas costs. It
is
estimated the standards will save $57 billion by 2011.
THE
GREEN BUILT HOMES PROGRAM OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
California Living & Energy, an independent testing and inspector
of homes (as required by law), offers builders a Certification
know as Green Built Homes of AmericaTM. The Certification exceeds
the standards of the Energy Star and Utility Rebate programs. Builders voluntarily
decided to participate in the program, reflecting their decision and commitment
to be environmentally conscious in a number of energy management and construction
methods.
To earn the certification, a home must
meet or exceed strict testing and inspection schedules.
These include implementing:
- Water Conservation: utilizing methods
to achieve nearly a 25% reduction of residential
water usage through improved Plumbing & Landscape
Design.
- Energy Efficiency: applying "Green Building" methods
that significantly reduce a home's energy consumption—as
much as 30%—through improved installation
procedures for drywall, insulation, sealing,
and HVAC systems.
- Smart Waste Management—Recycle/Reuse:
implementing techniques that promote
environmentally friendly waste disposal processes
during the home construction process.
